there were a few things on metafandom that collided in my brain to make a thought.

someone asked something like why do feminists write about men so much

and someone else wrote the protagonist is the one that is changed

so its obvious - feminists write about male protagonists because they're the ones need changing.

;-)

eta: okay, having read more links I discover the comment was about POV
why do feminists write from male point of view.
which, since I think of POV as being who I follow around, comes out the same most times.
but if its writing looking through male eyes... my first thought was about the original fic idea I had the other day. If I write it from the POV of the chick with the sword, she's talking about everyone else all the time. We get to see all her insecurities because we're in her head. And we get to see how she sees, for instance, her boyfriend, who she thinks is the most wonderful person on earth. So the man ends up looking good.
If we write from the POV of the boyfriend though... WOW does that swordwoman look good. And the man kind of fumbles about trying to keep up and being all insecure because this time we're in his head.
So male POV can be very positive about women ie feminist.

A woman writing is feminist. Because lookit, woman doing a thing woman wants to do. The rest is fiddly and down in the details. POV is not a fine tuned enough detail to be positive, negative or anything else.

"the protagonist is the one that is changed" - That's a very good way to look at things.

I thought to do a poll about childhood and gender, something like:

When you were little, the protagonist in your imagination world (which today we might call a Mary Sue) was usually..

A girl
A tomyboy girl
A boy
A sissy boy
It changed a lot
Something else, like a talking animal
Never had that sort of thing
