So in the last post I was thinking

If you had the opportunity to go to a New World, permanently, on a one way trip, taking only what you could afford and could transport (which only includes houses with a whole lot of ingenuity and investment):

Would you go?

What would you pack?

And who else would you want along with you?

So I asked imaginary-Owen (it's not crazy, I'm a writer) and he was hmmming about perishables and consumables and the necessary industrial base for advanced pharmaceuticals and imaginary-Jack asked us 'And this is relevant to your work how?'

Cardiff:
People had the opportunity to go to a New World, some of them permanently, some taking only what they had on them at the time, others with the ability to pack carefully and expect their friends to drop by regular and take them home again. Each set of conditions would result in different Stuff Packed. And they may or may not have brought anyone along with them.
If all we have to go on in figuring them out is what they've packed, we can still figure quite a lot.
Presence of a weapon may or may not mean invasion; presence of the ability to manufacture weapons or ammo probably does.
If all they've got is a first aid kit they're probably not harmful. Unless they try the first aid without checking it works on humans first.

Stuff like that.

So, everything is relevant to Torchwood.

Also, I have figured out my role in any such off world expedition: I would bring my laptop, with suitable solar and clockwork power sources, and pack it full of ebooks, including the rule books for RPG systems, useful manuals from survivalists or the military, and spell books. Because you never know. Then, whatever we find, I will have a rules system that can classify it. and figure out the relative points value.

I would also collect stories. I could pack a lot of fiction into one laptop if I stuck with text. Video would require some serious storage. I hear they make portable hard drives now with storage in quantities I would never have dreamed of needing. and I could fit a lot of audio in. I'm thinking more audiobooks and adventure, but also iTunes University for lectures, and possibly some music though that's not really my area of expertise.

Depending on the tech level and copyright laws of the locals I could make a pretty good living off that. Only slight difficulty would be since it's a one way trip it'd be right difficult to send the relevant payments back to the rights holders... but of course I'd pay them if they turned up in person...
