beccaelizabeth: Ethan Rayne smiles (Ethan smiles)
I think the Ethan Rayne I've been building up in my head for the last twenty odd years got political in ways other people's fic mostly doesn't.

I keep thinking about Giles/Ethan because order meets chaos and new creative possibilities emerge between them.

I also feel like dropping Ethan into Golarion to show him the careful what you wish for world, the high magic everyone can do this world, post multiple apocalypses.

Easy enough to use canon from both sides to get him there, multiple Adventure Paths have characters go from Golarion to Earth, and one has time travel in case anyone wants to complain about timelines not lining up.

Plus it's pretty easy to imagine him going 'anywhere but here' after canon left him.

I dont know, I havent pulled together a coherent story yet, just...

There were so many problems in the Buffyverse and giving the power of epic punching to even a really large number of young women doesn't seem likely to fix them all.

Neither would magic, but wouldn't it be fun to try?

So I'm trying to think up an Ethan shaped world, and see how Giles would balance it out, instead of the other way around.

I feel like Giles probably thinks the world is basically okay, apart from all the demons and undead and cults tearing holes in the world, and that's pretty frustrating.

I keep on getting focused on villains because they keep being the ones saying
This Is Not Okay
and, well, *gestures at everything*

The people who want to preserve the world have an important point, but they can't be the only ones driving, you know?

So.

Don't reckon G/E will be the key to sorting out the worlds problems
but wouldnt it be fun trying?
beccaelizabeth: Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer holding a large book, animated text, "Watcher" alternates with "Weapon" (watcher weapon)
Dreamed of Rupert Giles today, turning up in a caravan and needing somewhere to stay.
He looked about the same age as he did in the first episode.
I looked him up. That could plausibly be the age I'll be this year. I'm catching up.

Weird, watching and feeling perspective shift as generations change.

Now I'm imagining someone saying I'm the Chosen Mentor, me and my library, so I have to whoosh off to another continent and do all That.

... and then get criticised for my qualities as a father, despite being a very late addition to a 16 year old's life.

... still say he's a Teacher, not father.

Me and my cosy worn in life and my routines and vague feeling I should join a club with more people in it
but mostly staying home and reading (slightly older and more erudite) books...

You know, I thought I understood Giles pretty well back then, but from here?
That's a Lot.

And teenagers are ever so very much younger.

Yikes.

... Giles thoughts kind of day...
beccaelizabeth: animated icon, Giles pictures and Giles&Ethan, quotes 'Cup of tea, cup of tea, almost got shagged, cup of tea' (Cup of Tea)
Rupert Giles had been cursed so he had a month to live, and it took him a week to figure out the details, and he was probably going to be comatose for the last couple of weeks. So we had one week to break the curse.

In order to break the curse, we had to find 7 people willing to risk their souls for him, by giving him experiences based on the 7 deadly sins.

Sex, basically. 7 days of sex. Sometimes with cake.
(Cake was with Oz, because biting, and a sincere offer to make him wolfy too because obviously then he only dies of silver. So it was biting but not too much biting, trying to get the cake and icing and so forth without breaking skin even a little, while he was, well, mobile, and not entirely averse in the moment to the skin breaking concept.)
Or we needed to call/summon Ethan for Wrath, because lets face it, Ripper totally has Wrath sex there.

See the part I resent is it turned into a running around trying to find people dream, because come on subconscious, as porn setups go that one is awesome.

Dream got stuck because obviously Ethan, Oz, Buffy, Willow, Xander, and, er, Mary Sue, but then we need him to know a whole other person. And past that point the choices are not obvious. I mean, they might end up being mundanes who wouldn't know the risks, or who don't think curse breaking is a good enough reason to have Envy sex in front of former students.
If Jenny is alive they're not former students and my asleep brain noped right out.
If Ethan needs summoning rather than breaking out of prison then Anya is not available either.
Probably Olivia then. So finding and persuading her gets a lot more complicated.

Most of today's dreams though were just running around trying to find. People, places, clothes, suitcases, a part of Australia that isn't trying to kill you, a door that only exists once an hour yet a whole year has passed on the other side, or conversely obviously a door that exists once a year yet has only had an hour, all sorts.

I blame the power tools outside. I don't know what they're doing but my quality of sleep would appreciate them doing it a lot less.
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
I'm lacking big thinking about Buffy of late. There seems to be a bunch about masculinity and violence, direct parallels between Spike and Riley, and Riley and Adam of course, plus some stuff about how useless Giles and Xander feel now they're not defined by their jobs. Giles and Xander keep trying to help with the violence cause they've got none jobs and want to be useful, Xander beats up Spike and it's a sign he cares, Giles gets all sad because nobody is scared of him any more. Spike of course refers to his lack of capacity to do violence in direct comparison to neutering. Masculinity and violence. Big thing.

... big thing covered by every other show ever. Bored? Kinda. I mean, not bored of the episodes, but not coming out with meta.

All of them feeling less masculine because Buffy is more successful at violence than they ever could be, and Spike and Riley eroticising that, that's a thing BtVS does a little different. Mostly if the girl is kick arse it's to teach a guy to be better than her by the end of the movie. Here she just stays better, consistently. Yaays.

The same sex desire metaphor in the magics, the way Willow and Tara have to be, er, subtle, and the way Giles and Ethan are at the pub... a couple of old mystics, sorcerers, the night is still our time... yeah, still liking that, except for the not trivial thing where not being allowed to show stuff sucks. But the metaphors are pretty and the guys at the pub are, well, I'm coming up with plausible and I don't know if that's what I mean? Giles responding when he thinks Ethan is calling him attractive, intense eye contact, history together... you can see it happening, and you can see it in those scenes.

Ethan and the Fyarl thing: you can read it as Ethan didn't do it. Way back at the start of Buffy, episode three, it was established that one way to undo every spell in progress was to kill the caster. But when Giles the demon breaks in to grab Ethan, Ethan says "I can't undo you if you kill me!" Okay, he could be lying about everything, but if true, it means it wasn't his spell.

If it was then it's a classic be careful what you wish for. Giles wanted to be scary.
But that could also mean he got very, very drunk and did something unwise to himself. Unlikely, sure, but if you want to tell that tale...

For G/E shippers there's the teensy problem of him apparently trying to get Giles killed when he tells Buffy "It killed Ripper and now it's trying to get me!"
He could simply be mistaken about how far gone Giles is, if he can't get back from there. He could be making a complex statement about tweedy Giles and his ongoing fight with his own Ripper side. Or it could just be mischief to cover his own escape. Granted Buffy tries to kill Giles because of it, but she epic fails. And Ethan predicted that, reckoned "You're only going to make him angry." If he don't believe Giles can be hurt then it's mischief, not murder.

But then there's "I've really got to learn to just do the damage and get out of town. It's the 'stay and gloat' that gets me every time."
He's saying he did damage, and should have run before Ripper caught up.

Probably meant to be Ethan then.

But there's loopholes available if you want them. Like, what was he even doing in the place a demon was meant to rise and didn't anyway?

... Ethan Rayne can be so much more interesting if you read a little depth into a character that's pretty much just an excuse for mayhem to happen. But mayhem of the insides to outsides sort, which is always very character based fun.

Giles chasing Professor Walsh because she called him an absent male role model, always funny, but again connecting masculinity and violence. Giles feels powerless and judged, because a woman is implying a woman made herself without him. So he gets big and scary at her. Because clearly it's fun to use threats to counter words. And clearly it's more funny because it's Giles, who is usually words guy. But it's a moment that comes from him, not Ethan, even if Ethan did give him the outsides to do it.

Rupert Giles: earning his nickname since the early 70s.

I'm dissatisfied with how they used Walsh. She was evil psychology lady, and some of that was clever. Introduced doing stuff like controlling the discourse by naming herself as both good and evil versions, smart on several levels, and funny from writers cause they know what we don't. Creepy stuff that reminds me of abusers when she controls Riley just by mocking or relabelling his feelings, so he's just being college boy when he's trying to have opinions. Makes him feel small and then tells him to make her proud, so all his self worth is supposed to come from her reactions. Reworking his base code, like Adam said. Must have taken a lot of creepy manipulative work. And then making soldiers that don't ask questions... that's such a wrong view of soldiers. So all of that is perfectly good evil overlord stuff. But it's wrapped up with Riley and Adam calling her Mother on different occasions, and the weird thing with watching Riley have sex and getting rid of his girlfriend. Creepy gendered stuff. With no matching good version. I mean, if they're exploring mothers, Buffy has one of those, but no, they're just contrasting with Giles for some reason, current teacher vs ex teacher, at a point Giles is distanced from Buffy. Also there's previous evil teacher ladies but no hint of comparison. Comparing what Walsh does to what Watchers did would be perfectly reasonable, but you have to reach to other seasons to do it. Which, okay, it's season 4 and you'd expect some stuff to just be background, but I'm dissatisfied with how it turned out. There should be more women, more mothers, more teachers.

... I'm watching Buffy and thinking there need to be more women, even though Willow and Tara and Anya and Buffy are all right there.

I'm quite a lot creeped out by how Xander treats Anya. I mean I know she's an ex-demon but the comparisons with her behaviour have her turning up on list of autistic characters, so this time every time Xander corrects her on social skills is kind of grating. Like she's not meant to have her own thoughts and feelings but has to fit the mask on to be acceptable to him. It's not that she's actually learning compassion and empathy and that good stuff, she's just being told 'we talked about this' and changing how she behaves. I feel like Xander doesn't actually like Anya, he just likes how she makes him feel, and part of that is him feeling like he has the knowings and can teach from a position of moral superiority.

I'm super grumpy today and don't know if it's the TV that's always grump making or me that's always in a grump. So it goes.

The first three seasons, the basic metaphor was 'high school is hell'. Okay. They shift to college, but after the room mate episode I'm unconvinced they upgraded to 'college is hell'. More of a general 'young adulthood is hell'. Everyone trying to tell you who to be and shape you into who they want, but at the same time leaving you to sink or swim and not supporting you like you were supported a minute ago. Not knowing how to relate to adults, who are now meant to be other adults like you, but get cranky if you treat them that way and make you feel weird. Being expected to make a quantum leap in maturity and then frowned on for thinking you're mature. The whole thing with the drugged Initiative agents seems less metaphorical and more just a thing in itself, but I guess the pressure to perform physically and mentally is a college thing. Even Willow's magical lashing out is the thing where having a little power does not always go so good. So the metaphors are still there.

I'll watch more episodes later.

Someone's meta over here says:

Abraham Lincoln once said that to get the true measure of a man's quality, you shouldn't judge him by how he handles adversity, but how he handles power. I find that's useful when writing characters, because at some point in the story, someone is going to get power over someone else, and what they do with it often sets the measure and pace of the rest of the story.

So I'm thinking Giles and Ethan. Read more... )

If you go to google maps and type in "Bath oak" then you get a little arrow pointing at a middle of nowhere place near Oak Street.

A made up place in roughly this area is where Giles is.

I have no idea about plausibility. I'm sure I poked maps a lot when I was inventing the place in the first place. Unfortunately, if/when I wrote down the results, I didn't put a useful tag or note to self on it. Which makes it harder to find.

*sigh*

... see is difficult figuring where the nearest pub is if I haven't decided where nearest is in general.

There's an oak street and an oak ave, and oak street has more pubs near it.

Including 2 that show up on the BBC guide for gay pubs.
The BBC have a guide for many things.

ANYways, I know I figured out the distance from invented-place to the hospital last time, and I think it comes out about right this way, and also it is near Wells Road, which is obviously handy.

... Fictional geography is trickier than it looks. I mean, if I was being really precise, I'd have to figure out where a guy of his socio-economic background would be likely to be.
Instead I just make stuff up. Making stuff up is much more fun than research I have no idea how to do.

Rating: I'm aiming for a tone much like Buffy or Angel, which are 15 to 18 rated in the UK.
Pairing(s): Giles and Ethan are in the same story, therefore it is vaguely G/E
Spoilers: Post Chosen, post Not Fade Away. Refers to earlier series canon.
Third in my Fool's Journey series, the rest in memories here or my fic tag. This one should basically make sense as a stand alone.

Summary: Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne. Best mates, worst enemies, sometimes both at once. They've got a lot of history. So even when the Initative took Ethan away, Giles was sure he'd see him again, sooner or later...
Now the late Ethan Rayne is turning out to be twice the trouble, and Giles must be the one to deal with it.

I really don't understand stories that start off by trying to make Giles un-Giles. Especially ones where it's all "wow, he looks younger!" I mean, given the amount of time he spends all beat up and/or wearing tweed, I can buy a certain amount of "looks better" could improve the story. Tweed looks scritchy. Nice leather obviously an improvement. And nothing being actually broken at the time is always yaay. But starting off being all "he changed his hair and now he looks about thirty!" or "there was a body swap and the temporary owner spent all his time working out and now he looks younger and like a bodybuilder"... Why?

I mean it isn't like there's a shortage of thirty year olds in the world. Or for that matter a surplus of stories about Giles when he was thirty. But suddenly shaving a couple of decades off his appearance... Why?

Also, he is not a bodybuilder. He's a martial artist. Some 'actor' people aside, they don't usually look like body builders. Giles does running, and fighting, and would therefore basically end up looking like a guy that runs and fights and doesn't much care if he looks all... calendar guy. And I don't think making him all anatomy drawing muscles is actually an improvement.

He's got a body for getting around in, not standing there being looked at. He's cuddly, and yet kick arse. I like that.

I also like his glasses. I don't think he looks better with them off. He looks un-Gilesy with them off. Some of the frames are better than others, but I like Giles in glasses. Also, if he wanders around without them, I get uncomfortable from sympathy fuzzy.
Yes, I know I'm slightly strange.
But anyways, arranging so he doesn't need glasses, not so much fun.

And any of these changes reduce his distinctiveness. I mean a 50 year old guy with glasses is in shorter supply as an action hero than a 30 year old body builder type. Distinctiveness, yaay.

... Yeah, I'm, er, not reading Great Expectations stuff right now.
I read a whole bunch.
Next I could read the introduction in the book, or a few more pages in one of the other books.

I think I'll have something to eat and see if I still feel like going back to sleep. Back to sleep and studying aren't so much mixy.

And I have to get up at 0645 tomorrow anyway.

You can never lose yourself, on account of actually being yourself, all the time. Maybe not a self you like, but still self. Same with that 'true self' bit - it's all true. All in there somewhere. Just sometimes you show the face you want to claim later, and other times you want to turn your back on it.

Can't take bits of you and call them not-you. I mean if it was fingers that would be obvious. Lindsey aside, there is no evil hand, there's just hand. Same with all this 'Ripper was his bad self' bit - Ripper was his self, and there was bits of it get called bad. Doesn't mean you can cut it off and chuck it out, any more than you could with fingers and be healthy.

Understand, balance, use.
Not call not-self.
Got to own your demons before you can control them.

How I know I'm relaxing about college a bit: I have enough spare worry to restart worrying about the fic currently with a beta reader.

How I know I'm really not entirely relaxed: I figure out that Tuesday is going to happen again relatively soon and I get that horrible oops that was a cliff edge feeling in my stomach.

Also, I am eating.

I realise food intake is actually necessary, but what I mean is I keep wandering into the kitchen, grabbing something to eat, and eating it, no matter how sugary it is or how many times I've decided I don't actually *like* that kind of cake.

Is getting a bit embarrassing.

I think in the next food order there will be much less cakelike. Maybe just double the bread rolls instead.

Been saving screencaps from websites. Have very many Giles, even though I wasn't looking for Giles today. Giles pretty.

Have also many Oz, very very few of them relevant to the project I set out to do, that being an Oz in an academic setting. It turns out that is rather hard to do. So far he turned up for class once, on the first day. Sat next to Willow for Psych that one time, no other times visible. Aside from that I have Oz with a piece of paper, and a whole lot of naked and/or wolfy Oz.
Naked isn't terribly academic, and yet...

Is he ever actually in class in high school? I didn't think so but I haven't exactly looked today.

I think it's in What's My Line he has both weird dark hair and some kind of face fuzz. That isn't a good look on him.
Shades of red, yaay. Brown hair? Unyaay.

I keep thinking maybe I could have icons which look like girls. Academic Willow would be easy to find. But I don't feel particularly Willow-y. Or girly. *shrugs*

Giles has many different shapes of glasses. I like early season 1 because they look kind of like Indiana Jones in this picture I downloaded where he was tweedy in class. I don't like the rectangle frames much. I like when the frames get less visible.
He also spends a lot of time with no glasses on. I wonder how fuzzy the world gets when he does that. If I do that I can still see my feet, pretty much my toes too, but what they're actually standing on is a bit more guesswork than I like. Still, can get around without them okay.
Some people couldn't so much see their nose without glasses. Don't reckon Giles is one of them.
... Actually seeing noses is pretty difficult anyways. Seeing things held around nose level would be more the thing I was thinking.

I ramble.

I think I go sleep soon.

Or possibly eat again.

Today I noticed that almost all my Ethan porn thoughts have something to do with Halloween. Not Dark Age, Band Candy, or A New Man, just Halloween. Is part the costumes, and part the shop, I think. And the statue and ritual. And the thing where absolutely anyone could plausibly meet him there.

Giles porn is always in the library. Stories with content might be in his flat, but the porn is always surrounded by books. I don't really think about him in the magic shop except for when I think about places I should think of him in.

Other characters mostly happen in combination with Giles or Ethan.

He returned to the military as he would likely return to his faith, but now taking a different position within them -- one where he became truly active in his own life.

Which struck me as wrong, but not, on reflection, wrong in canon. I'm not sure we get enough canon to figure either way.

Riley was in the military, went all secret black ops, got betrayed by them, stopped being military for a while. Went all... undone, all his previous things he called himself not working any more. Not a soldier, not a superhero, not Buffy's beloved, not a whole lot of things, from his point of view. Flirted with dying, because really, getting fed on by a vampire is way too close to getting yourself killed. And then the military threw him a lifeline. Drowning and normless, he got offered a nice ready made identity and set of rules, all clear and decided, and from a part of his life where he hadn't had to do any of that messy thinking.

Maybe he took all his contradictions back in with him.

But maybe he just tried to rewind and start over, be nice uncomplicated by the book boy again.

This is how my Ethan see Giles returning to the Watchers, as running away and letting someone else do his thinking for him. So I look at Riley, and figure, there's a lot of things in common with Giles. Differences too, but things in common. Duty. Rule books. Buffy not actually needing them. Reacting badly to Buffy not actually needing them.

... this is the kind of train of thought that usually leads to /, but I don't want to go there.

Both guys, they had a bad patch. Specific comparison, Giles mentioning his Ripper years in connection with the vamp suck jobs.

Both guys went back to a rigid structured environment they had previously been part of.

But what did that mean? Did they bring their new understandings to the old job? Or did they throw them out and pick up from where it hadn't gone wrong yet? The former would be a positive response, but the latter would be ignoring the whole thing where before it went wrong was in fact part of the path to going wrong.

Its a bit like, Giles can be read as a bit of a rebel as a Watcher. Or, he can be read as basically a by the book Watcher who got fired.

He changed his mind and went against the Council once, at a point where it was pretty much too late, when he'd already done his part of the bad things. The way he trained Buffy was nothing like how Kendra was trained, but Faith had a Watcher too and she wasn't much like Kendra either. The 70s Slayer Spike killed must have been un-Kendra-like too, or there wouldn't be offspring. And when Giles tried to be the boss, Buffy was all "and you would be stopping me how?" so I think how he ended up being was an ongoing negotiation between his preferences and hers. I mean, even Wesley was a bit less of a prat after he'd been there a while. So even shiny Council employees can be a bit flexible.

If Giles set out to do things different, that is one version of him. If he just sort of ended up with a very different Slayer, that is another.

I tend to figure always it is a bit of both, for people are complicated. Janus faces, looks like two but is one.

We didn't see much of Riley after he decided to go back to the before people. We did see a lot of Giles. Still both of them might have done it as a positive progress or a negative retreat.

Poking around Wiki for interesting facts about Bath
found Bladud, mythical king, supposedly founded the city, dedicated it to Athena or Minerva, and practiced necromancy, divination through communication with spirits.

The Minerva thing was probably because the Romans reckoned Minerva was the same as the local goddess Sulis. Sulis was a goddess of the hot springs, which arrived so vividly fresh from the Underworld (cf. Annwn), therefore she guarded a liminal connection between this sunlit world and the Otherworld, where there was knowledge that could be effective in prophecy.

Putting Giles and ghost stories there gets more fun the more I find out.

I'm thinking in pictures today
so

What few images from the BtVS series would you use to show off Giles for the Ripper spin off? Not cool lines, more the kind of thing that goes in the opening credits, picture moments. Exactly like what they used for BtVS? Or different?

What symbol would you put on the video set? Buffy has the heart on fire, or the heart and stake. Angel has those cool wings. What about Ripper?

What font would you use? Buffy has that splashy looking brushstroke thing, Angel has pointy bits that disappear, what font for Ripper?

Every time I watch Restless I pull more detail out of it. It is a very fun episode.

I know there are a bunch of transcripts, but are there any transcripts of the commentary? Because Joss always says interesting things.
(There's a page that turns up with I google Buffy commentary transcripts, but it doesn't seem to actually have anything on.)

About Giles this time he says

Giles here, his biggest problem is that he can't decide who he wants to be, he can't decide, you know, should he be going off being a father and living a real life

This after saying the whole world is this silly vampire carnival. The vampire worls is silly and being a father is 'real life'? I thought the dream came out way more layered than that. Is fun.

Also, there's a big elephant made of plant and covered in fairy lights. I've temporarily forgotten the word for things made of plant. But I find myself amused by elephants. Mostly because of this fic I've written in rough draft but not posted because its not terribly good yet. I should make that shiny, and then everyone else can be the same amused by presence of elephant in that dream.

I like the story about the blind men and the elephant.

Of course the big plant thingy could be not-an-elephant, because of being a plant, and kind of abstract.

Dream sequences would be much easier to write if we didn't already have canon on what his dreams look like. This and Dark Age together and trying to match them. Much easier to just make stuff up.

... except this would be why writing fanfic is fun, so I'm not really sulking ...

Somewhere outside my building there's an alarm bell going off. I do not know why. It is annoying.
I shall go wander off and be random elsewhere.

Giles - do we know everything important about him?

Little clicky poll to start with.

I was wondering, do you think that we already know, from canon, everything important about Giles? We got a reveal in The Dark Age, we got bits about his background. We got to find out what kind of donuts he likes. Do we know all the major things?

If we're writing fanfic, and we make something up, have we got big stretches of blank or really obvious necessary things that need filling in? Or are we fiddling with the details?

If we add bits to the making of him, will they be like table legs, or just more twiddly carvings?

We know about his Duty. We know about a Horrible Trauma. Is there more, somewhere in those years before canon?

Is there more in the bit after canon, when he went back to England? Was what happened to him then particularly significant?

What do you think are the key moments in Giles canon anyway?

A New Man

So, I rewatched A New Man for the S3 summer rewatch thingy.

There is not enough Giles. Its a Giles ep, yet I found myself all bored and waiting for more Giles when he weren't on screen. And quite uninterested in Buffy or Riley, except for what they meant for Giles.

Gee, you'd think I was a Giles fan...

I want to win the lottery and fund the Ripper tv series.

Or maybe just make some magic so the Ripper series gets made.
Is anyone using magic for that purpose yet?

I know I read a comic used magic to get more issues made. Whatsisname, chaos magic nutcase wrote The Invisibles. Made up a sigil and got everyone to wank for Thanksgiving over it, iirc. *googles* Grant Morrison, 1995, says here. I think I remember reading it had some problematic side effects. Would have to search with actual thought.

ANYways

Every time I watch A New Man I get the same plot bunny - the episode from Ethan's point of view. He was in town for a reason, he was in that crypt for a reason (not following Giles, he got there before him), and he was doing something that whole day Giles was wandering around. Plus I still say its not proven that Ethan did the demon spell. We only know for sure he de-demoned him.

There's stuff to notice in the clothes. When Giles worked at the Sunnydale High library he usually (or at least very often) wore variations on red and gold, the school colors, as well as the brown tweeds. Now he's at home, he matches the home decor. Green and brown. But he also, once drunk, matches Ethan, both in dark shirts, though Giles wears a t-shirt under his. He's always wearing layers - I've got a film studies book says that's a hint the character is layered. Which works. Ethan on the other hand has just his shirt, open a button more than most people. Anti-layers? But I think he's far to twisty to call wysiwyg.

There's the obvious, the focus on three couples. Buffy/Riley, Willow/Tara and Ethan/Giles. Buffy/Riley is the obvious new man. Giles thinks he's an old man. But there's the whole "new man" image of new masculinity, looking after children and cooking and staying home. Which is one way of describing what he's been doing, except the children are now growing up. Ethan is a new to town man, but Giles calls him old, including him in a "we" that is all about Giles' self image problems. I strongly suspect Ethan doesn't like that at all. Not for himself, and not for Giles. Ripper is so much more fun to be around.

And then there's Buffy and Riley, the fight, the bit about holding back. Willow saying you shouldn't have to pretend to be less than you are. But what else does Giles ever do? He's the superhero stuck in Clark Kent mode, to the point everyone seems to have forgotten there's more to him than that. Except Ethan. Remembers Ripper.

So then Giles wakes up demon shaped. Angry, powerful, vengeful. Nice little mirror Ethan holds up to him.

Beyond that, Ethan tried to warn him about the Initiative, but Giles wasn't listening. Was, in fact, sounding like he admired them.

Ethan gets arrested by the Initiative. Giles wears a shirt, one of Ethan's, but not matching how we've seen him dress ever before. Silver and black. Later at home he's wearing grey. And so, when we cut to the Initiative in the last scene, is Riley. Walking through rooms covered in silver or with grey and silver doors, with bits of black around.
Yes, as per usual, I may be reading too much in, but it looks a bit like they're comparing Giles to Riley and the Initiative, saying they're lining up very similar here.

Being a demon for a day should have given Giles some perspective. Without doing anything wrong, he ended up hunted. But did that bother him? Yes, a little. He wasn't sure Ethan was wrong, at the end. He told Buffy so.

He let them take Ethan away, but he told Buffy he wasn't sure he was wrong?

Giles was a Fyarl, which among other things is a footsoldier demon, usually working for other demons. Taking orders, not making plans. Giles compare to Riley again. Different sides, but both with that respect for Order that they allow to rule them. From Ethan's point of view, very big problem. Turns out to be so from other points of view too.

Initiative were upsetting the balance. Between demons and humans, yes. Between Order and Chaos? They tried a total control approach to demons, to the supernatural in general. Put it in a box, bury it, or use it. Order breaking out the big guns and taking charge. Except that doesn't work. Star Wars quoteage - the more you tighten your grasp, the more systems slip through your fingers. Or sociology textbook quoteage about police patrols and the vicious cycle where increased police presence, increased stop and search, leads to decreased public trust and cooperation and therefore the need for more police presence to get ever less done. Or just the way the season ends, total chaos breaking out because total control reached maximum capacity.

Ethan was right.

And Ethan was never heard from again.
