I watched the recent DnD movie and it was pretty good, like evrryone has beem saying. Fun characters, fun adventure. Everyone got a bit of a character arc.

I think the arc 'believe in yourself' gets used so much because it's something you can resolve at any plot convenient minute. But it is indeed an arc.

I am a bit tired today but the movie is fun.

Today I watched Singing in the Rain
because it is their Lucky Day
(good morning, good morning)

It's fun but it's weird because the good bits version in my head doesnt keep all the songs?
Most of them though.

I keep reading the Yuletide fic though because those three were
very obvious
which is fun.

Today I sat down to watch the newer director's cut of Justice League,
Zack Snyder's Justice League
15
2021 ‧ Action/Adventure ‧ 4h 2m

... I should have read the box before I started because that run time was a *surprise.*
I had to stop for dinner half way through. I had not realised the time investment I was sitting down to.

But! I also ended up realising it is actually? A good movie?
I mean it's thematically coherent, it uses all the main characters, it sets up and then pays off, it is a good movie.

I could criticise bits of this movie but it made me feel the grief and hope it set out to, plus gave essential central focus to a black man saving the world while coming to terms with his disability, so I think it did fine.

I just think I'll stop the movie slightly earlier in the epilogue next time.

I felt like this extended edition had a little more room to breathe in several moments and I liked it quite well
but I liked least when I was most sure it was doing something new.

When it got to the bit featuring the character in the title, mum kept interrupting to ask what was going on and why they were doing that.
Which as I said to mum is probably why the ordinary version cut those bits out.

I think we're pretty likely to watch the familiar version in future, but, it was a success watching this one today
and my brother said next week Apocalypse
so he liked it well enough to make plans.

Win.

just watched the one with Charlie Hunnam.

... I'd have liked that better if they'd called it almost anything else.
There were bits of several British heroes pasted together if you squint, the sword was arguably recogniseably Arthurian, but the names were pasted on at random.

As a couple of hours of fantasy movie it passed the time. Women were mostly dead, in a brothel, or dead in a brothel, but there was one whole speaking role who got stuff done. Could be worse.

Don't reckon I'll rewatch it any time soon, but dont feel the need to get rid of it either.
Second time of viewing I'll not be waiting for it to have anything to do with Arthur and may well like it better.
Maybe.

Today I watched the movie 'Valerian'.
The cover blurb says "visually astonishing"
and yes, I agree, they went all out on the visuals, that was a whole lot of cool pixels that gave you a visual extravaganza at all times.

Problem is it had ten, maaaaaybe twenty minutes worth of story, and the other two hours were a whole lot of whoosh boom to give you a tour of those visuals.

It never mattered that these were alien races. It was a very basic story. You knew what had happened and what was going to happen, plot wise, from the first five minutes.

Also there were basically two characters and I found them both obnoxious. Which never helps.

I watched this film sped up and still felt like it was far too long.

Which is a pity, because the background pretty was a whole lot of work in every moment.
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
Today I watched the first two episodes of the Loki TV series
which I feel like I've watched in gif form on tumblr
but which is interesting so far to see in sequences and with sound.

I also watched Doctor Strange (still annoying) and Thor Ragnarok (still mostly fun).

Yesterday I listened to a few Torchwood One audios.
I know Torchwood are often the bad guys but they are so Very the bad guys at One.

I have been thinking on the Black Widow movie, which I watched at the weekend, and trying to think why it was not the fun I was looking for.

... the backstory is very upsetting, I expected that, but I was expecting different things once Nat was an adult.

Black Widow is a movie we wanted made... but possibly not exactly like this?
She was fun to watch because she could plough through whole crowds of opponents, mostly guys much bigger than her, she could manipulate anyone, mostly guys much more powerful than her, and she... basically knew what she was doing? Better than anyone?

She freed herself from the worst circumstances. Having been raised by people full of hate, she made a choice, and became her own person.

I feel like the movie didn't give us any of that.

spoilers under the cut

There's a story to be made about a whole school of Black Widows, raised and trained to believe wrong things, and how the one who left first can help the others get out.

It would require writers to make some decisions about what that wrong stuff was, and what the right things were, and be persuasive in both directions, with the good stuff winning.

Thesis, antithesis, fight!

... this was a whole set of fights without a thesis, I feel.

It wasn't even about fighting for freedom ina way that maps to the real world.

It was just... empty.

So I did not like Black Widow in the way I liked the stories Black Widow could have been.

And then of course the tag scene is there to just... draw a hard cut off on the whole thing we just watched, and remind me why I hated that other movie.

So the overall experience is like... being sold advertising.

I did not quite enjoy it.

I didn't get daytime shopping hours today, apparently they're swamped and holidays are making Difficult, but the evening hours worked and turned out quite nice.

I went to Meditation at the Norwich Buddhist Centre and the teacher was different because usually does Kings Lynn and yoga. So we started with a lying down body scan, and then a posture thing with 7 things to check, and then the mindfulness of breathing for 20 minutes, and then the metta bhavana, which I like because it's twenty minutes of practicing thinking kind thoughts. Thinking kind thoughts sounds easy until you try it. I start out with the feeling from when the TARDIS arrives, the happy to see you feeling, and try to add to that. Not precisely traditional but nice.

So that was fun and I wasn't fidgety today, though happy is not a still thought, happy dances, but that was okay.

Did discover not to leave my nice belt bag in my lap because it's fine for ten minutes and then it's pins and needles oops.

But I started the evening moping and not wanting to go anywhere
and ended the meditation feeling good and thinking good thoughts
so that was a plenty good refresher reminder why I should do more often.

So after that we went and got Ribena at Sainsburys and Pizza at Pizza Hut, because vegan cheese
and I got home and watched Captain Marvel.

:-D
🚀☄

Higher further faster!

I love the bit where she stands up.

Also the music, though it's funny/irritating that the subtitles just call it all upbeat music. It's very well chosen words matter music.

I love the fight after Come As You Are.

And I was thinking while I meditate that entertainment gives us lots of practice at feeling good about smiting our enemies but not as much practice at kindness and finding the good in them, at least if you're me and filter for whoosh. This movie at least had a whole think carefully for yourself and try ans see if enemy really is. But still. My principles and my entertainment don't always pull in the same direction.

But it's really fun watching Carol.

... now I kind of want the blu ray to see what extras it has.

So that was a very good evening.

Had a nice day today, mum did visit and we watched one of the Ealing Studios Collection I bought, Passport to Pimlico. A bit of paperwork and some treasure get discovered when an unexploded bomb finally went off, and it proves that this one street in Pimlico is actually a whole country of its own, and also, because treasure, rich. It was nice, bits of funny, kind people, and all the situation rolled from the initial silly idea. It's from post war when rationing was on, and most of the fun comes from people finding a way to tear up the ration books for a while, and how that doesn't quite work out.

Also we ate some foods, we can both eat the Amy's Kitchen trays, so we both had Pad Thai.

And when we were chatting at the start I was all :-( about my laundry being out of control, but I realised I could in fact start a laundry right that minute, so I did, and we had an intermission when the drying needed sorting. So that was helpful and productive. :-)

it was wet when it was go home time but mum had an umbrella.

so that's a pretty good day.

My brother visited and we watched Jumanii, the one with Karen Gillan.
Mum doesn't like it, I think. She made faces and after the movie she was like "Do you have the same opinion of it as I do?"
So I was like "I get something different out of watching Karen Gillan than you do."
... which led neatly to planning for Pride, the local one being a few weekends away.
... I like it now we're on the same page.

Jumanji is very silly, but fun. Like I watched more than half of it all *facepalm*, but I'm in a good mood now, because fun.

Also Jack Black is the most teenage girl. I had heard but not believed and then he just was. Acting.

And I like the story. That whole learning each other's strengths and winning through trust and teamwork bit does not get old.

Just all the specifics are Silly.

We had a fun afternoon.

Today we watched The Last Jedi. I hadn't watched it yet and had heard Many opinions on it, and also knew what would happen, which I'm pretty glad of because then I could look forwards to the good bits.

I watched an animated Wonder Woman from I think 2009? In a two disc set. On the other disc were two episodes of Justice League Unlimited.
I want to watch more of JLU, even though it was not entirely satisfying.
I did not like the movie Wonder Woman.
Even the live action movie that upset me had good points this one did not.
Wonder Woman as I know her makes friends with women and helps and is helped by them.
In this animated movie she just mocks and insults them, except for one child, who she teaches to stab.
I feel this doesn't capture any of the good points of Wonder Woman as are specific to her.
She fights real good, but so does anyone in the genre. There's supposed to be more to her than anger?
And she slaps Steve Trevor in the face a lot! And then lets him kiss her? And I can't see what his merits are supposed to be on this one. Sure he fights real good to protect her, but the problem is meant to be Ares stirring up men to fight, so unless they're making a more subtle point about attack vs defence than I really got out of it, he's just a rude man who gets away with it because he's good at his job. He tries to get Diana drunk? He's a pig and calls himself a pig? Why that man out of billions??

I like the movie much better when it has this to improve upon.
And I didn't like how she was here for men there at all.

Sometimes I wonder if I made up the good bits of the comics in my head.

If I did I should write them down, because they were very good.

*sigh*

It's also frustrating when the supervillain team up is better at team than the league, but I imagine other episodes improve on that.

Diana having to learn from Dove to be less aggressive, or at least with his help learning it, that was not my favourite bit either.

But I did like better that they had to stop fighting to defeat the god of war. That one moment in JL Unlimited made more sense than the whole moviemit was packqged with.

*double sigh*

I should stop complaining about story and write some if I think I know what is good.

I got bored and bought the Lego Flash movie and the Flashpoint Paradox movie, then watched them both tonight.

Flashpoint Paradox is boring, and far too dark. I thought there would be feelings but it's one giant fight sequence with everyone's worst selves, a ton of murder, and repeated child death, including murdered by the usually heroes. Read more... )

Darkest timelines where everyone ends up fighting each other are just... I don't see how this one had any salutary lessons really. Painting the Amazons as evil man haters isn't really a logical side effect of a man saving his mom. Just ends up looking like writers have issues.

Also the Flash saving his mom meant he lost his wife? Which makes it a choice between childish clinging to the past and actually moving on into the future, even without the apocalyptic stuff. Except, his wife had married someone else and had a kid, so along with saving the world, he erased a child. Which should matter? A lot? So the emotional setup and the superhero fights had nothing to do with each other.

I would only use this story for parts.

I wonder if the comics version makes any more sense than this animated version...

So that one was no fun.

But the Lego one was plenty fun!

Reverse Flash again, and he's decided to show the world the Flash is rubbish by trapping him in a time loop and replacing him to become World's Best Superhero, the Only Hero The World Needs!

I liked many parts of this film and the story and the spectacle supported each other and it did a grand job of making a whole alien world that's just under water.

Also it's one superhero movie with a good answer for why he just doesn't ask his superhero friends: they can't breathe down there. He has a whole world of his own. Pretty cool.

I am very impressed that they made me impressed and invested in an Aquaman movie when I've been reading comics and being a DC fan for so long and just, like, barely paid him any mind. That sounds mean but I mean, whatever wasn't working for me before, they've fixed it. Pretty cool.

So that was a pretty good day.
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
I watched Infinity War
and
that is just a bad movie.

The way it was filmed and framed and all only made sense if we're meant to give a damn about Thanos having feelings
like, we get multiple moments that should be about fallen heroes or something and we are instead watching his face
and it's... junk. I mean, his argument for doing the thing is junk. That should go without saying. He is a bad guy doing a bad thing, and we don't care if it hurts his feelings.
So the movie is garbage.

Also, I was bored. Actively, wandered away to get snacks, stopped half way through for a while, bored.

I realise I've seen all the spoilers and all the crit on tumblr and I'm echoing a lot of the negative opinions here, and I guess the film makers were really invested in people seeing the movie without spoilers, so they'd say that would be a different experience. But that wouldn't answer the problem I had with it, because I wasn't expecting it to be bad in the specific ways it was bad, that still surprised me.

Also it's not just the specific plot that pissed me off, if they want to tell a story about superheroes screwing up then this was certainly one they could tell, everyone had feelings at mostly plausible moments. It's just how it was told, it seems like the writers like Thanos? And think he made any tiny bit of sense?

Which is garbage.

So this film was boring nonsense.

And this is meant to be the set up of the payoff of ten years work?

Ugh.

I sound mad about it but I'm mostly not? Like, this was boring, it was mean, and I had known that in advance.

If I had the stones and had concerns about finite resources I would not answer them this way. I would start with like ringworlds and other such stellar engineering meant to harness the maximum amount of energy, and then see if we ran out of space in the next few million years. Maybe use the time and soul stones to bring a bunch of people back and do that thing where you put people from different years down next to each other with enough space for them each to live on and end up with a timeline all living at once. That seems interesting. Answer the big purple idiot with a more efficient use of resources and demonstrate exactly how much more room we have.

It's so very boring to get power on that scale and use it for killing. You can do that without it. Why bother?

Blah.

I am not currently thinking I need a ticket for Endgame.

Kind of sad I spent money on this one.

I watched Venom and then read https://rydra-wong.dreamwidth.org/79396.html Rydra Wong's Walked Right Out Of The Machinery, and so now I have Thoughts about parasites and symbiotes and civilisation. Not on the whole new thoughts, but I thought I'd write them down again anyway, since I keep going silent around here.

Stargate set up the goa'uld to be very alien and very limited, in their unbonded forms. The Tok'ra were living with the same biology, but made different moral choices about what to do with it. The Venom parasite has different constraints, not least that it eats its hosts. And then there's Jadzia Dax, treated very differently than all of the above, since the Dax symbiote doesn't stay a seperate voice in the host, an old being taking over a new life, they just conjoin completely, becoming together an entirely new being, or so the legal argument went.

We don't know much about the reproductive biology of Trill symbionts, or at least I don't. I hear there's stuff in the comics about Venom and his lot, but I don't know it. And that's a bit frustrating because you can go from the goa'uld's biological constraints to explaining their whole society. ... no I don't know how much the writers intended, and I haven't watched canon recently, but still, thoughts can happen. Read more... )

The thing is, Stargate wrote goa'uld as profoundly limited, biologically speaking. Impaired, compared to humans. Limited senses, no fine manipulators, possibly even limited capacity for thought. They are utterly dependent on their hosts for most functions.

And then Stargate presented them as evil because of this.

What would be a fair arrangement, for two minds in a single body?

Answer that, preferably with an array of choices, and you've got a solution to the raised problem, rather than just a Biologically Evil Species.

True symbiosis, instead of parasites.

It's frustrating when the story doesn't want the same answers.

Just a more efficient war.

Of course another answer is what Baal did, to create more bodies that didn't have their own minds. Cloning technology opened up a whole new vista of possibilities for his species. Read more... )

Whether the symbiote needs the body or the mind of the host changes a lot about how they'd structure their society.

It's the difference between getting an exoskeleton and getting a friend, or teacher, or student.

The Tok'ra made a start, but they weren't great at it, and didn't take the symbiosis idea far enough. Individual, still not cultural. They could have magnified their ideas through far larger groups, but they were too constrained by secrecy to avoid being wiped out in that war.

... I feel like if they'd just bought a bunch of slaves and set up an experimental world somewhere they'd have done much better in the long run.

See the stories I'd tell, starting from the same biology, wouldn't so much be about the nukes and the shooting. That's the Problem. The solution is a lot about learning to be good neighbours, which means everyone getting their needs met. How they understand those needs is part of that. And they'd come up with a lot of different answers.

I haven't watched most of the source texts for this for a really long time. Rewatch long overdue. So I'm sure I'm missing or misrememering a bunch of stuff.

But I had a thought to take for a walk, about parasites and symbiotes and the societies you'd need to build to make those lives work for everyone in them.

They'd need to work out a balance of priorities so both species had freedom to pursue personal projects and could improve the conditions for their own species and their own children.

The human ideal of attachment to a small group or an individual presents a model for a healthy relationship between symbiont and host.

But potentially the goa'uld greater good of improving the environment for the support of all future generations could present a model to improve how humans manage their worlds too. I mean, if you wanted to write them that way. They'd changed their whole way of life and engineered civilisations to support a far lower infant mortality rate for future generations and spread from one world to many. That was all good stuff.

It was just unfortunate that by making it more comfortable for the individual goa'uld parasite they'd cut themselves off from the data source that could let them understand how to make the whole thing work for everyone.

It would be way more interesting to write about sorting out that civilisation and working through the rebuilding than it is to write just blowing it up. Blowing it up is the same every time, figuring out how to mesh very different sets of needs is different.

I should write stories some time.

I got around to watching Antman and the Wasp.
I can see how that could be a fun movie for people that are not me.
Not exactly my sort of thing.

I did like the Wasps and Ghost and how the plot got resolved.
Also how much of Scott's home life is hugging now. That's nice, we usually get stuck with unresolved animosity, now there are hugs.

I just don't find much of the funny funny and all the shrinking growing stuff somehow doesn't wow me even when it is objectively quite clever.

Also what was with that credits scene???
Like, this is a fun family movie for kids!
... right up until everyone *spoilers*.
I do not see how that positively contributed to the movie
and it would have been better as a cliffhanger if it had stayed Scott's pov to the last frame.

Not the best movie but it didn't suck.

Today was Birthday Party
because my brother is in this town on Sunday and it is closest to the usual routine.

We had cake! The nice one that is Free From everything and I ordered at Sainsburys :-)
... my brother finished his piece in seconds but was quite content with that portion, I was slooooow and was like wow that's a lot of cake, and mum had seconds, and liked it. Between us we ate nearly 2/3 of the cake. That is a lot of cake.

Then we watched Justice League. Read more... ) I liked Barry babbling and being bad at people, that is Relatable, but I didn't get Feels about this movie in general. And keep getting stuck on how I would do the 'verse different.

See this is why I watch the MCU much more easily, I don't compare it to decades of older comics in my head or how things were when I was a teenager.

But! It was a pleasant afternoon's viewing, more or less. And I like Aquaman because having seen Momoa in Atlantis he feels like he's one of us, or ours? And now he's all up there doing great? And I like the way the casting works with Aquaman as a story, ethnicity matters the good way, that bit is great.

... I guess I like the characters without liking the movie they were in? That's... that's now what they were aiming for. Oh well.

We also watched some vids because my TV YouTube shows good stuff now, except I'd been watching a lot of Rogues vids from the Flash TV show and they don't watch the TV shows so I had to go find things we'd all understand. So I watched Dream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJlPnPYlg8A and Starships https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTGdGKEEiYE and The Greatest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIHZd0-sj_Q and also one of the We Will Rock You MCU vids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA4x8woMFSs .

My TV doesn't know many vids that are multifandom yet, it's pretty stuck on MCU and The Flash with a bit of Legends of Tomorrow, which is cool but I need to learn how to teach it stuff.

... I might have to get a YouTube account to teach it stuff.

There's a button in the settings so I can tell my computer about my TV, so then I could link a lot more stuff a lot more easily.

I don't know though, I kind of hate how YouTube knows all about us, you know?

But it helps it make cool suggestions?

So.

Anyway, then we had done the usual Sunday visit ritual and it was time to go home, so I'm on the internet telling y'all about it.

Mum did bring presents too, I have a bag with a unicorn on, I must find a purpose for it and use it sometimes. There are unicorn socks too. I don't know why mum thinks we are unicorns now but it's cool. A bit pink, but cool.

So that was pretty good birthday party.
