On the naming of ships

beccaelizabethI'm filing the serial numbers off the Enterprise NX01 so I can have Malcolm go out on the ship hull to deal with a mine. So I need to rename it. Enterprise is a core virtue of the USA and the Federation, having to do with hard work in risky ventures, with some connotations of business and making money. Plus there's the less subtle Enter Prize. Renaming the ship is therefore an opportunity to show the core virtues of the made up world I'm working on.

health not wealth being what they've banded together to preserve. They decided that making money was secondary to keeping all their body parts and staying human. They've got a definition of human and they've kicked out everyone who doesn't live inside the lines. There was a big war and everything. Now the remaining humans are very hung up on Purity. There's things they'd rather die than do. Every ship has a political officer to help explain which things are on the list.
So I started looking for Purity words.
Incorrupt means fresh or untainted, not rotten, not decaying, not corrupt; not debased or perverted; morally upright. Not to be corrupted; incorruptible. Not vitiated by errors or alterations, or relatively free from error or alteration, of a manuscript, text, etc.
I like the free of alteration bit: no genetic alteration, no body modification, is the founding principle of the Commonhealth.
Plus it has the simple In Corrupt, they're headed into corruption, they've got corruption within.
And I did start trying to make it sound like Enterprise. Partly because it has a good rhythm, and partly for a compare and contrast, and partly for, er, funny.
I already named the ship once when I was fiddling with GURPS design rules, but I figure if the name wore off when I wasn't looking, it wasn't the right name. Phoenix can be for later. It's so generic.
The Captain is easy to rename. Archer = Sagittarius, so I can flip the word into different languages and have an excuse for why a space person is named that. I decided the Captain was played by Naoko Mori so I looked at Japanese. Modern Japanese Constellation names has a good long list. Says it would be Ite, for Sagittarius. But I tried to find a second page that agreed with it and they say Iteza or Ite-za; all the other constellations I find have za on the end. So really I need to find someone who actually speaks Japanese and ask them. But I actually like Iteza more, it's more likely to be read the way it sounds in my head, and it doesn't get any Google hits for Captains, unlike Ite. So I'll go with the dictionary. Dictionary says Ite is Archer and Iteza is The Archer Sagittarius. Okays.
She needs a first name that means 'reborn'. Saisei is the closest I've managed to figure. It means a bunch of other stuff without specifying the kanji and I think I can live with all of them. Also in my head it sounds enough like Susie to sound like a name. Trying to figure out if they'd make an actual people name together is irrelevant for in-universe reasons, but might sound like I haven't done my research. Er, I attempted my research, but it was all hard and stuff.
I looked up name order and it's family+personal according to Wiki.
... I keep putting it in personal+family order instead. Like Toshiko Sato. Lots of names are that way around to fit on the forms around here.
So it's Saisei Iteza, if she's been fitted into currently dominant British name order, or Iteza Saisei, if variations persist into the made up future. I think the whole point is they slot people into their appointed boxes, so I can put it Saisei Iteza and keep everyone in the CSS in personal+family name order.
Kanji... do they show up when I copy paste? Sagittarius is 射手座 Iteza and rebirth 再生 Saisei.
But I won't be typing them.

Then the political officer can be Commander Oli Pavo, because peacock eyes go with the all seeing thing. He's second in command, and does Communications, making it most difficult to have opinions he doesn't hear.
I have a file full of pictures I put together to be the officers, but then I realised I'd ended up like Enterprise in that everyone with a name was an officer. Slight problem there. And yet I'd have to understand little things like what the not-officers do and why there's two sets of people anyway before I could fix it. I keep looking it up but it keeps on being a complex system, a whole ship, let alone a whole navy, so I don't think I actually get it yet. *big sigh*
When I started with GURPS rules there were people who would need a command console and people who would need a toolkit. That made sense. I have figured all the command console people, but not so many toolkit people.
Also my attempts at figuring out shifts have gone clunk. Watches don't last many hours, so people can pay full concentrated attention for all of them. Then they juggle them around so people can have regular meals. Then they have traditions and stuff. I'm left going lalala it's like this cause I SAY SO lalala.
Ships are hard.
Why am I inventing a ship just so I can throw Malcolm and Beatrice at each other?
... because the mine started talking with a Welsh accent and I cannot resist a pun...
