Why am I pretty much all awake at 0545? Weird.

I just had this dream that was like a contemporary post-apocalyptic AU of Blakes 7. Only instead of the Liberator, there was a coach. One of those big shiny long haul ones with the massive cargo space and the toilet.

We might still have called it the Liberator, I'm not sure.

But there are more seats than just 7, and we were filling them all up.

So now I'm thinking, coach has like 48 seats, sometimes a couple more, and a driver.
So who would be in all the seats?
AU challenge for fandom! Ficathon! Plot bunny central!
Heroes on a bus!
See, coolness!
;-)

I need more sleep...

So I've been thinking on connotation, and how just a few tweaks in the setting can give you an entirely different experience. 48 seats is a lot. You could fit the whole cast of even quite large TV shows into 48 seats, with room for redshirts to spare. So why do Our Heroes never ride the bus?

Think about it. Battlestar Galactica? Could be redone on a bus. Read more... )

Like Babylon 5. Again, tin can, people. Read more... )

Firefly? Practically *was* a bus. I mean, they trundle around, bits falling off all over, just trying to make enough money to keep on moving. You do that with horses, its a western. On a spaceship, SF. Either way has a certain set of connotations, adventure and romance and all that.
Make it a bus? The romance is gone. Read more... )

Andromeda would be tricky. Their coach would have to be a relic of a bygone era of better engineering. Probably have to be foreign. Also, extra shiny and able to repair itself by eating rocks. And everyone would want to steal it.

Same with the Liberator. Except theirs was from a highly futuristic society all obsessed with computers. So, Japanese, with cruise control and a dashboard that talks to you in koans.
Blakes 7 has the glowing ship too, but theirs was like a limo. You can get limousine coaches. They seat about 15. I figure they're for rock stars or something.
oh *dear*, now I have the AU bunny where B7 are a band...

Farscape-on-a-bus: the whole living ship thing would be an issue. Read more... )

And then there's Star Trek. Read more... )

I saw a LJ icon once said 'Margate SG1'. That's much funnier if you've been there.
SG1 has no bus.
SG1 needs no bus.

You know, the more I think on this, the more British it seems. Read more... )

SeaQuest... would not be a bus show. Unless someone ignored the signs somewhere with a causeway or a really high tide.

Angel would have problems with light proofing. Probably have to travel in the suitcase section.

And Buffy?
It's canon.
Everyone saves the world, and what saves them?
The bus.

Buffy can make anything cool.

there were a few things on metafandom that collided in my brain to make a thought.

someone asked something like why do feminists write about men so much

and someone else wrote the protagonist is the one that is changed

so its obvious - feminists write about male protagonists because they're the ones need changing.

The written phrase Ethan left on a card in the costume shop, presumably intended for Giles to find.

according to the transcript sites, said two other times, once in "The Zeppo" and once in "You're Welcome", both as part of longer sentences.
Xander says "I don't think I want to be seeing you on campus anymore, Jack."
Cordelia says "We take what we can get, champ, and we do our best with it. I'll be seeing you." And walks off, then changes her mind and comes back for the kiss.

The Cordy example is interesting, since the phrase was pretty sinister the first time, and the whole vision thing worked out so, er, well.

Trivia sites mention that the phrase was used on The Prisoner. A page on tv.com says It was a standard form of greeting, ironic since a) everyone was prisoners - it's not like they had much choice but to see each other, and b) the authorities kept everyone under constant surveillance. The phrase was later picked used by J. Michael Stracynzski as a catchphrase for Psi-Cop Bester on Babylon 5.

I hadn't actually read that last bit before. It was in fact what I started this entry to mention.

Bester said Be Seeing You, and so did the guy who shot Garibaldi in the back, his best friend and right hand man who betrayed him.

So Ethan's use of the phrase is layered with these intertextual meanings. Probably deliberately. Being watched, being unable to escape, fits nicely.

I see it sometimes used in fic fairly straight, without the sinister overtones, and it jars a little. But G/E is always a little twisted, more obsessive, and it certainly fits the relationship.

The Cordelia thing I only just noted while searching. But if you put the sinister in there? Season 5 looks just that bit darker. Because who says Cordelia was a good guy, the way things all turned out?
